Metallographic test method for Die casting

Metallographic inspection usually checks the microstructure of the alloy to determine the properties of the casting. However, in the production process, metallographic inspection is often used to perform inconspicuous defect inspection on certain parts of the casting, which is an effective method for identifying defects in the Die casting. It is divided into two methods:

 (1) Macro organization test (macro structure test)
 The second Et is used to etch the polished surface of the sample to determine defects such as cracks, inclusions and pores in the casting.
 (2) Microstructure detection (high power detection)
 The polished surface of the sample was etched with an etchant to give it a microstructure, and the sample was enlarged by 100-500 times to find defects.
 Samples selected for metallographic examination must be cut from the location most likely to produce defects.
 The metallographic examination can correctly identify whether the casting defect is a porosity or a shrinkage hole, especially a hole in a cross section with a large thickness of the casting, which is generally considered to be a shrinkage hole. In Jinxiang, shrinkage defects have zigzag uneven edges and dark cavities, while porosity defects have smooth edges and highly reflective (bright) cavities.

 Metallographic inspection also identifies defects such as coating inclusions, oxide inclusions and cold insulation.
